• Partners and Collaborators: ULI Washington; Neighborhood Fundamentals, LLC

ULI Washington assembled a research team that included Plan + Place to explore barriers to housing supply and attainability for individuals and families across the income spectrum. As part of this effort, Plan + Place conducted research on the nexus between housing affordability and community engagement.

Focusing on the Washington, DC metro region, the study examined two critical factors that affect the speed and certainty of the development process: navigating of the local regulatory and approval process and gaining community acceptance of a development. The report explores the ways in which both issues impact housing supply and affordability and identifies recommendations to increase attainability across a range of housing types, income levels, and regional locations. The research process included best practices research, interviews with local government and community stakeholders, and focus groups with professionals working in the fields of housing, real estate, design, and community engagement.

The Eva Walker Commemorative Garden was planned and implemented as a community focal point within the newly master-planned Eva Walker Park in Warrenton, Virginia. Working in partnership with the Town of Warrenton and funded by an AARP Community Challenge Grant, Plan + Place designed a garden to commemorate the life of community leader Eva Walker. Developed in collaboration with the local community and Eva Walker’s family, the design resulted in an intergenerational gathering space that honors both Eva Walker’s life and heritage and the historic African American neighborhood that surrounds the park.
