The Morningside-Glendale Neighborhood Association of Iowa City, IA, partnered with Plan + Place and received funding from an AARP Community Challenge Grant to organize two workshops focused on walkability and placemaking within the Morningside-Glendale community.
Held on September 15, 2024, the first workshop invited neighbors to participate in three walk audits to identify opportunities to improve safety and accessibility for residents and visitors of all ages traveling within the neighborhood. The second workshop, held on October 19, 2024, explored the neighborhood’s history and identified placemaking opportunities to enhance its unique character in a fourth walk audit. Together, the workshops fostered connections among neighbors and deepened the community’s understanding of design and planning strategies that support walkability and placemaking.

Partners and Collaborators: ULI Washington; Neighborhood Fundamentals, LLC
ULI Washington assembled a research team that included Plan + Place to explore barriers to housing supply and attainability for individuals and families across the income spectrum. As part of this effort, Plan + Place conducted research on the nexus between housing affordability and community engagement.
Focusing on the Washington, DC metro region, the study examined two critical factors that affect the speed and certainty of the development process: navigating of the local regulatory and approval process and gaining community acceptance of a development. The report explores the ways in which both issues impact housing supply and affordability and identifies recommendations to increase attainability across a range of housing types, income levels, and regional locations. The research process included best practices research, interviews with local government and community stakeholders, and focus groups with professionals working in the fields of housing, real estate, design, and community engagement.

Partners and collaborators: Town of Warrenton, Virginia; funded by an AARP Community Challenge Grant
The Eva Walker Commemorative Garden was planned and implemented as a community focal point within the newly master-planned Eva Walker Park in Warrenton, Virginia. Working in partnership with the Town of Warrenton and funded by an AARP Community Challenge Grant, Plan + Place designed a garden to commemorate the life of community leader Eva Walker. Developed in collaboration with the local community and Eva Walker’s family, the design resulted in an intergenerational gathering space that honors both Eva Walker’s life and heritage and the historic African American neighborhood that surrounds the park.
